Kylian Mbappe says the FIFA World Cup is his obsession after leading France to the quarterfinals

Kylian Mbappe stated on Sunday that he hoped to win the World Cup for the second time after scoring twice to help France beat Poland 3-1 and move to the quarter-finals in Qatar.

"Of course, this World Cup is an obsession for me; it's the competition of my dreams," said the 23-year-old, who emerged onto the world arena by playing in France's World Cup victory four years ago in Russia.

The Paris Saint-Germain star scored five goals in four games this tournament and is now France's second-highest scorer in World Cup history, with nine goals in 11 outings.

Only Just Fontaine has more World Cup goals for France, scoring 13 times in the 1958 tournament in Sweden.

Mbappe, on the other hand, maintained he was unconcerned about winning the Golden Ball as the tournament's top player.

"The sole goal for me is to win the World Cup, which means winning the quarter-finals," added Mbappe, who also set up Olivier Giroud's first goal against Poland.

"That's what I'm hoping for. I came here not to fight for the Golden Ball. That is not just why I have come. I'm here to win and contribute to the French national team."

While veteran Giroud scored his 52nd international goal to surpass Thierry Henry as France's all-time leading scorer, Mbappe was France's greatest performer once again.

He had been chosen man of the match in France's first two victories over Australia and Denmark, only to refuse post-match media responsibilities, exposing the French Football Federation to a FIFA punishment. He did, however, appear this time to chat with reporters.
